Good-Shepherd-Project

The “AP Good Shepherd Project” aims to provide evidence-based quality after-school academic support to students with Special Educational Needs (SEN). The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK), commissioned by Advance Children Medical and Education Foundation Limited (the Foundation), will build a training platform to train SEN tutors specialized in academic support of students with three types of SEN in focus: Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Specific Learning Difficulties in Reading and Writing (SpLD). SEN tutors who have successfully completed the specialized training will be leading after-school tutorial groups in participating schools, under the direct supervision of Educational Psychologists (EP) from Edge Development Centre, with priority to participate in the groups given to students from low-income families. SEN tutors will be closely supervised by Educational Psychologists and receive guidance on how to accommodate the needs of SEN students to ensure the quality of our service.

The project has been carried out for two years. It has served 49 primary schools and supported more than 700 students. The research team of the Education University of Hong Kong analyzed the data from the past services and reached multiple research findings. Along with the past service experiences, it will further refine the service mode next year and cover a more extensive range of training to provide services closer to the needs of students. Since 2021-2022, other than homework guidance, training about executive skills and learning skills designed by educational psychologists are also provided. It aims to provide pertinent support to a broader range of SEN students.
