Introduction

The ADOS® is a structured and standardized assessment to evaluate a child’s communication, social interaction, and play. Providing specific contexts allows observing the child’s social behaviours, communication skills, and repetitive behaviours. The purpose of the ADOS® is to aid in diagnosing autism spectrum disorder and is often used alongside other clinical interviews, such as the ADI-R. Standardized toys, materials, and activities are used during the assessment to create opportunities for social and communicative interaction with the examiner.

Workshop Details


Part 1: Introduction to ADOS-2 Module 1-4
The course aims to cater to clinicians and researchers who have an interest in utilizing the ADOS®-2 in their work with individuals diagnosed with autism. It serves as an introductory session to familiarize participants with the ADOS®-2 as an assessment tool, and also serves as an initial step towards achieving reliability in administering the ADOS®-2. The course includes group lectures, demonstrations, scoring exercises, and provides access to videos showcasing live ADOS®-2 administrations.

Part 2: ADOS®-2 Toddler Module Introductory Course
This course focuses specifically on the Toddler Module, providing participants with lectures, DVD demonstrations, and discussions related to the administration and scoring of the ADOS®-2. It is specifically tailored for researchers and clinicians who already possess a background in formal testing and have experience working with young children, both with and without autism. Participants are required to have prior training in modules 1 to 4 of the ADOS® / ADOS®-2.

Notes to Participants
  1. Before the workshop begins, attendees are also required to familiarize themselves with the ADOS®-2.
  2. The current training in the use of the ADOS®-2 will be conducted in English. If participants are international delegates whose first language is not English, or if they plan to use the assessment in languages other than English, it is recommended that they verify with WPS that an official translation is available for clinical and/or research purposes before undertaking the training. Ad-hoc translation is not allowed, so it is important to ensure the availability of an authorized translation.
  3. By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to understand the ADOS®-2, including its background and application in clinical assessments. They will be familiar with administering the ADOS®-2 tasks and have acquired the foundational skills necessary for scoring and administration. While additional practice is needed to attain proficiency and reliability in administration and coding, this workshop is the essential training to support such development. Participants will also learn how to utilize ADOS®-2 scores in assessments and interpret this information within clinical evaluations.
  4. Attending this workshop does not automatically qualify individuals to purchase ADOS®-2 materials. The ability to access the test materials is subject to specific qualification criteria established by the publisher and distributors of ADOS® materials. To learn more about the requirements for purchasing, please consult the websites of the publisher (Western Psychological Services) and the Australian distributors (ACER, Pearson, PAA). 6.The facilitator can determine whether an applicant is eligible to attend the training and utilize the ADOS®-2, especially if the applicant does not fall within the intended participant group.

Trainer’s Biography

Dr Sung Min is a Senior Consultant at the Department of Developmental Psychiatry, Institute of Mental Health (Singapore) where she is the Programme Director of the Neuro-Behavioural Clinic (Autism Services). The Neuro Behavioural Clinic (Autism Services) was established 18 years ago and manages children with an Autism Spectrum Disorder and co-morbid mental health disorders.

Dr Sung obtained her Master of Medicine (Psychiatry) from the School of Postgraduate Medicine (National University of Singapore) and obtained her Advanced Specialist Training in Psychiatry in 2004. She is an Independent Trainer in the Autism Diagnostic Interview- Revised (ADI-R) and in the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS). Dr Sung is a Senior Clinical Lecturer with the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine at the National University of Singapore. She is involved in research on Autism Spectrum Disorders locally and has authored some books and book chapters in this area. In 2005, Dr. Sung received the Healthcare Manpower Development Plan Fellowship Award and was attached to the Autism and Related Disorders Team at the Michael Rutter Centre for Children and Young People at the Institute of Psychiatry, United Kingdom. She received the Healthcare Manpower Development Plan Fellowship Award (Team) in 2017, and completed a study trip to the United Kingdom with the aim of developing services for Autism Spectrum Disorders.


Dr. Goh is a Principal Clinical Psychologist with the Department of Developmental Psychiatry, Institute of Mental Health (IMH), Singapore. She is an Independent Trainer in the Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R) and in the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS). She has extensive clinical experience working directly with children, parents and caregivers, and also mentors fellow professionals. She is currently holding adjunct or associate teaching positions with institutes of higher learning such as LKC School of Medicine and Singapore University of Social Services, as well as is a clinical placement supervisor for the NUS Master in Clinical Psychology programme.

Dr. Goh was awarded the National Medical Resource Council Fellowship award under the Ministry of Health, Singapore, to complete her Doctorate in Clinical Psychology in 2011. She was also a fellow with the Rehabilitation Research Institute of Singapore 2016 and a Donald J Cohen Fellow at the International Association for Child Adolescent Psychiatry and Allied Professions 2016. She received the Healthcare Manpower Development Plan Fellowship Award (Team) in 2017, and completed a study trip to the United Kingdom with the aim of developing services for Autism Spectrum Disorders. She oversees the Internship Program in Child Mental Health at IMH and manages the research activities of the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. She is an active reviewer for many established journals and is involved in research projects in developmental disorders and child mental health.
