Language and Speech Assessment (Local)

  • Evaluator:: Registered speech therapist (member of the Register of Speech Therapists Accredited by the Department of Health)
  • Target:: kids/students with suspected language/speech problems
  • Assessment ScopePre-language skills, language comprehension, language expression, social language use, articulation, oral muscle function, vocal use, speaking fluency
  • Assessment tools:Use standardized assessment tools and non-standardized assessment tools for assessment according to the needs of school children

Standardized assessment tools include:

  1. The Hong Kong Test of Preschool Oral Language (Cantonese) (TOPOL)
  2. The Hong Kong Cantonese Oral Language Assessment Scale (HKCOLAS)
  3. Training Workshop for The Hong Kong Graded Character Naming Test (HKGCNT)
  4. The Hong Kong Cantonese Articulation Test (HKCAT)
  5. The Colorado Emergent Literacy Scales (CELS)
  • Assessment time:around 1 hour
  • Service Process:
    • Make appointment
    • Conduct assessment (about 10 minutes parent interview, 40 minutes assessment, 10 minutes post-assessment commentary and advice)

Note:

  • ◦ It is recommended that parents attend the assessment together
  • ◦ The therapist will use Cantonese, English or Mandarin to conduct assessment according to the child’s language background and needs

Language and Speech Assessment (Before studying aboard)

  • Evaluator:: Registered speech therapist (member of the Register of Speech Therapists Accredited by the Department of Health)
  • Target:: Schoolchildren suspected of having speech and communication developmental disorders
  • Purpose of assessment: To provide local teachers and therapists with a more comprehensive understanding of the students' native language skills so that appropriate follow-up can be arranged
  • Assessment Scope: Pre-language skills (if needed), language comprehension, language expression, social language use, articulation, oral muscle function, vocal use, speaking fluency
  • Assessment tools:Use standardized assessment tools and non-standardized assessment tools for assessment according to the needs of school children

Standardized assessment tools include:

  1. The Hong Kong Test of Preschool Oral Language (Cantonese) (TOPOL)
  2. The Hong Kong Cantonese Oral Language Assessment Scale (HKCOLAS)
  3. Training Workshop for The Hong Kong Graded Character Naming Test (HKGCNT)

  • Assessment Report: Chinese or English detailed report will be provided according to the language used in designated area
  • Assessment time:: about 1.5 - 2 hours
